Best Cat Breeds for Kids

Sometimes, deciding what kind of cat to get is done the easy way: A child comes home one day carrying a meowing fuzzball he found at the bus stop, gives his parents those eyes and begs, "Can we keep him?"

Whether it's the adorable kitten or the pleading kid, most parents don't have the heart to say "No," and the lucky cat becomes the family's newest member. But if you don't stumble upon your cat the old-fashioned way, you may want to take the opportunity to look for a few select personality traits that make some cats better matches for families with kids.

Here are a few of the best cat breeds for children:

Persian

Calm and affectionate, these cats get along well with children and dogs. They are also known as lap cats and will provide your child with plenty of company.

Abyssinian

This breed is known for its athletic ability, making it a great playmate for children. Abyssinians like to climb and investigate, and they don't meow much.

Siamese

Siamese cats are known as "loud talkers" and will have a lot to say, which your child will likely enjoy. They are also very active and love to play.

Maine Coon

These big, bushy-tailed cats are naturally sociable and tend to adore children. They are extremely frisky and fun, but need to be brushed often.

American Shorthair

These fun-loving kitties do well in homes with space to run around. They are happy and friendly, and they can live into their 20s, making them a perfect long-time companion for young kids.

While these breeds are known to be kid-friendly, it's also a good idea to check your local cat shelter for your new furry family member. Many times you can find pure breeds or mixes that have all of the great traits you're looking for!
