"Everybody in the Final is a Contender"

Olympic 200 meter Champion Veronica Campbell-Brown explains that Allyson Felix will be her main rival for the Olympic crown but also that everybody who makes it to the final has a good chance of winning.

The 26 year old Jamaican athlete only managed second place behind Felix in the 200 meters at the World Championships in Osaka Japan in 2007 and she feels she has something to prove at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Veronica Campbell-Brown will compete in the 200 meters and as a member of the Jamaican 4 x 100 meter relay team at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

World women's 100 meters champion Veronica Campbell-Brown failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in the women's 100 meter event after finishing fourth in the Jamaican trials. Campbell-Brown missed out on qualifying by just a 0.01 seconds.

At the 2004 Athens Olympic Games Veronica Campbell-Brown medaled in the women's 100 meters (bronze), 200 meters (gold) and relay (gold) making her to the most successful Caribbean athlete ever at a single Olympic Games.

Veronica Campbell-Brown Interview

Are you over not qualifying for the 100m or is there still a chance to run?

It’s not over until it’s over it’s always in the back of my mind because I see myself from the beginning of the year my main goal was to come here and win the double and I know I am capable of doing it for me to come fourth at the trials is something that is going to be with me for a while.

But at the same time I don’t let it overwhelm me or try to worry about it, because I have no control over the past, so I have to move on, sometimes I think about.

Does the rivalry between you and Felix side track you focus?

Absolutely not. I think rivalry is good for the sport at least your more driven to make sure you are in the top of your game on the track because it is not easy when you have somebody who wants to beat you somebody, you want to beat them and they want to beat you so you just have to stay focused and make sure that it is serious business when you go on the track I enjoy the rivalry.

This is not a race for the gold between just you and Felix is it?

Definitely, everybody in the final is a contender and everybody who makes the final has a pretty good chance of winning because anything can happen I always tell myself that a gold medal is not guaranteed so you have to stay focused go out there with the right attitude and compete strong.

It’s not guaranteed that you will get to the final is it?

Definitely you have to take it round by round, there are three rounds before the final and as I said before anything can happen, you have to just be wise about it and do everything you can to makes the finals because nothing else matters.

What’s your relationship like with Felix?

I wouldn’t say we hate each other it is all part of the sport it is just competition, you speak off the track but not on the track, its all about business, its just part of the sport.

The men’s 100m final is going to be a tough race, who do you think will win?

Definitely, I don’t know, nobody knows, we will have to see at the final they are all talented I think it will go down to the person who is the most mentally tough, that’s what I believe and the one who executes the race, and races the best because it is going to be very competitive.
