Olympic Record breaking and double gold medal winning Britta Steffen of Germany says she swam the first
50 meters of the 100m Freestyle final with her eyes closed to avoid being distracted by her opponents.
In the 100 meter freestyle finals Britta came from behind to beat Lisbeth Trickett of Australia
and American Natalie Coughlin with a time of 53.12 seconds. Trickett won the silver with a time of 53.16
seconds and Coughlin the Bronze Medal with a time 53.39 seconds.
Steffen, who also claimed the gold medal for the 50-metre freestyle and set a new Olympic record for the
distance of 24.06 seconds, says she was overwhelmed by the experience and she didn’t expect to win the
second medal.
