Germany’s fencing gold medalist Britta Heidemann is something of a celebrity in China, having spent
three months here at the age of 15. A Chinese student at Cologne University, the 26 year old became the
centre of media attention when she fielded press conference questions in Chinese.
Local celebrity pianist ‘Lang Lang’ met up with Heidemann in Beijing today and discussed her victory to
the delight of fans that have affectionately named her ‘little moon.’
Heidemann also took fencing gold at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka Japan.
For Britta Heidemann, winning at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics is a dream come true. It is unbelievable
what an exciting and successful year this has been for the 25-year-old.

Q: Did the team silver at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics inspire you to gold at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics?
We won the Silver Medal in the Athens Olympic Games with the team and since then it was always my
dream to win the gold medal too, so I put a lot of effort into all the training and finishing my studies
and everything went well and to win the gold medal is the perfect way to go back home from the Olympics.
Q: What do you plan to do now?
I plan on continuing with the fencing and I want to take part in the 2012 London Summer Olympics as well
and my plans for the next four years will be to do half day job and the other half sports.
That went well for the last four years and that is what I am going to be doing for the future.
Yes it was unbelievable that I was able to win the gold medal there were only ten chances for the German
team to win gold and I won one of them.
There might have been some pressure but I didn’t read very many newspapers
so it was not a problem for me.
