After winning a record eight gold medals in one Olympics, U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps says he was partially motivated by people saying no one could ever duplicate Mark Spitz’s achievement.

Between Athens & Beijing, Michael Phelps has won a total of 16 Olympic swimming medals.

In addition to the 8 gold medals at the Beijing Summer games, Michael Phelps won six gold and two bronze at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics.
