QB JOE FLACCO, BALTIMORE RAVENS - AFC Offensive Player of the Week
In an AFC North rivalry game against the Cleveland Browns, Ravens QB Joe Flacco completed 17 of 29 passes
(58.6 percent) for a career-high 248 yards with two touchdowns versus zero interceptions and a 109.6 passer
rating in a 37-27 victory.
Flacco recorded his first touchdown of the day in the first quarter on a 47-yard strike to wide receiver
MARK CLAYTON, giving the Ravens a 10-0 lead.
Trailing 27-20 in the fourth quarter, the rookie quarterback posted his second touchdown on a 28-yard pass
to wide receiver DERRICK MASON, which tied the score at 27.
The Ravens posted a season-high 429 yards on offense and scored the most points on the road since
November 7, 1999 (41-9 victory at Cleveland).
In his first season from Delaware, this is Flacco’s first AFC Offensive Player of the Week Award. He is the first Ravens quarterback to win the award since KYLE BOLLER in 2004 (Week 14).
DT KRIS JENKINS, NEW YORK JETS - AFC Defensive Player of the Week
Jenkins recorded three tackles, two sacks and three quarterback pressures as the Jets defeated Buffalo 26-17 in a key AFC East road game. In the first quarter, Jenkins helped the Jets take a 13-7 lead when his pressure forced a pass by Bills’ quarterback TRENT EDWARDS, which led to a 92-yard interception-touchdown return by safety ABRAM ELAM. Signed in the offseason to anchor the Jets defensive line, Jenkins helped stop Bills running back FRED JACKSON on a fourth-and-1 on the Jets eight-yard line to halt a potential Bills scoring drive in the second quarter. The 6-4, 350-pound defensive tackle helped limit Buffalo to 30 rushing yards in the game and posted two of the Jets five sacks. Through Week 9, the Jets’ defense rank fourth in the NFL in rush defense (76.0) and third in the NFL in sacks (29).
In his eighth year from Maryland, this is Jenkins’ first career Defensive Player of the Week Award. He is the first Jets defensive player to win the award since defensive end SHAUN ELLIS in 2007 (Week 11).
K ADAM VINATIERI, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS - AFC Special Teams Player of the Week
In a primetime game on Sunday night in front of 66,508 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium, Vinatieri kicked a 52-yard field goal with 8:05 left in the fourth quarter for the deciding points in the Colts’ 18-15 victory against the New England Patriots. The eventual game-winning field goal against his former team marked the veteran kicker’s first 50-plus yard field goal since 2002 (with Patriots, 57 yards on 11/10/02), and it was the Colts’ first field goal of 50 or more yards since 2003 (MIKE VANDERJAGT, 50 yards on 11/2/03).
In his 13th season from South Dakota State, this is Vinatier’s 11th career Special Teams Player of the Week Award and his third with the Colts. He most recently won the award in Week 8 in 2006.
QB MATT RYAN, ATLANTA FALCONS - NFC Offensive Player of the Week
The Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback completed 17 of 22 passes (career-high 77.3 percent) for 220 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a career-best 138.4 passer rating in the Falcons’ 24-0 win at Oakland. Ryan was nearly perfect in the first half, completing 13 of 16 passes (81.3 percent) for 184 yards with two touchdowns for a 154.2 passer rating as he guided the Falcons to a commanding 24-0 halftime lead. The third overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver MICHAEL JENKINS on the team’s first possession of the game, marking the fourth time this season the rookie has led the team to points on the club’s opening drive. Ryan’s second touchdown pass came in the second quarter when he found Jenkins from 27 yards out. The Falcons scored on each of their first four possessions.
In his rookie season from Boston College, this is Matt Ryan’s first career Player of the Week Award. He was also named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for October. Ryan is the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to win the award and is the second Falcon to be honored this year, joining running back MICHAEL TURNER (Weeks 1 and 3).
S ANTREL ROLLE, ARIZONA CARDINALS - NFC Defensive Player of the Week
Rolle led the team with seven tackles and turned the momentum of the game with a 40-yard interception-return touchdown in Arizona’s 34-13 victory over the Rams. With the Cardinals trailing 7-0, Rolle picked off a St. Louis pass and returned it 40 yards for a score that started a 24-0 Arizona run during the second quarter. The Cardinals’ 24 second-quarter points were the most by the team in a single quarter since 2001. For Rolle, the interception-return touchdown was the fourth of his career and he ranks third all-time in franchise history in the category. Only AENEAS WILLIAMS (6) and Pro Football Hall of Famer LARRY WILSON (5) have more.
In his fourth year from Miami, this is Rolle’s third career Player of the Week Award. He was honored twice last year (Weeks 11 and 17) and is tied with Williams for the most Defensive Player of the Week Awards in franchise history.
KR-PR CLIFTON SMITH, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - NFC Special Teams Player of the Week
Playing in just the second game of his career, Smith set a franchise record with 259 total return yards and had a 97-yard kickoff-return touchdown to spark the Buccaneers’ comeback in the team’s 30-27 overtime victory at Kansas City. The undrafted rookie out of Fresno State returned six kickoffs for 232 yards (38.7 average) and two punts for 27 yards (13.5 average). With Tampa Bay trailing 24-3 late in the first half, Smith recorded just the second kickoff-return touchdown in club annals by taking the kick back 97 yards for a score to help spark the biggest comeback in team history (21 points).
In his rookie season from Fresno State, this is Smith’s first career Player of the Week Award. He is the second Buccaneer to be honored on special teams this season, joining kicker MATT BRYANT (Week 4).
