Hamas, Syria

More than 130 Syrian protesters were killed on Sunday after another government crackdown on protesters. The hardest hit area was in Hamas, where dozens of activists died.

The fresh round of violence led to condemnation by western governments of the act.

U.S. President Barack Obama vowed to initiate international action to isolate Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague hinted of military intervention in Syria as he asked the global community to pressure more the Assad regime to step down from power. However, Hague admitted that even if Britain favored a UN-backed military action, there is no prospect of a legal, morally sanctioned military intervention.

Because of limits on international action, Hague urged nations to find other ways of pressuring further Assad to resign from his post.

The death toll in Hamas alone reached 95, which capped a month of security forces laying siege on the central Syrian city by sealing off access roads to isolate the residents from the rest of Syria. However, about half of Hamas' 700,000 population continued the protest action, prompting the government to deploy tanks and armored vehicles at dawn, which resulted in destruction of the barricades and death to some of the protesters.

The Syrian government claimed they sent troops to remove only the barricades.

German and French ministers joined Obama and Hague in condemning Syria's use of violence against its own people. Obama said that the renewed security forces attack on rebels showed Assad is not capable and not willing to respond to the legitimate complaints of Syrians.

Since the anti-government protests started in the middle of March, more than 12.600 Syrians have been detained and 3,000 others were reported missing.
