A retired Navy colonel called for the overthrow of President Benigno Aquino III in a video circulated on social networking sites. But drawing no support from the military, the presidential palace merely shrugged off the incident.

Presidential spokesman Abigail Valte on Sunday described the video appeal by Generoso Mariano as not alarming and an isolated case because his sentiments were not shared by his colleagues.

Valte also said the 56-year-old Mariano can work for former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in his retirement as his criticisms and accusations are the same as hers and the opposition.

Mariano complained in the video that Aquino lacked leadership. A copy of the video that circulated Saturday was anonymously provided to the Philippine Navy, which is now investigating the colonel for possible charges of sedition and conduct unbecoming of an officer.

Aquino's late mother and former president, Cory Aquino, faced a series of coup d'etat during her term from 1986 to 1992.
