Former New Brunswick Auditor General Michael Ferguson will be named the new federal auditor general.
He will replace interim Auditor General John Wiersema, who replaced in May Sheila Fraser, who served as Canada's AG for 10 years.
The appointment of Ferguson, expected to be officially announced in the coming days, is considered one of the most important to be made by the Tories as a majority government. Ferguson is currently a member of New Brunswick's legislative assembly and deputy finance minister.
Before Ferguson was appointed New Brunswick AG in 2005, he was the province's comptroller. NDP New Brunswick leader Dominic Cardy confirmed that the national party in Ottawa was consulted about Ferguson's proposed appointment.
Ferguson, in his last AG report, criticized the Liberal government led by Premier Shawn Graham for its failure to control the province's growing debt.
The AG's office and is tasked with auditing federal government departments and agencies, including Crown corporations and several other federal organizations.
