Apple Watch Finally Arrives

Apple unveiled its highly antcipated Apple Watch, with prices ranging from $299 to $13,500 for the solid gold version.

Apple is hoping to dominate the smartwatch sector with the launch of the Apple Watch, but will consumers be convinced of the necessity of the device?

The watch is Apple's first major product launch since the iPad in 2010. And it will allow users to check email, pay for goods at retail stores, and monitor personal health information, all from a device worn on their wrist.

The pressure is on Apple to prove to consumers that they should spend the money on the luxury fashion piece, which will start at $349 dollars. Lindsey Turrentine, the editor-in-chief at CNET, says Apple's goal is to convince people that their smartwatch is something they need.

"The smartwatch category is still very young, there are a lot of people who don't really understand yet why they might want a smartwatch, Apple is going to tell you what's so different about this and why you should care, essentially."

A big part of the success of the Apple Watch will likely be its ability to help streamline basic tasks for users, but in the end, it will hinge on whether people feel enthusiastic enough to add another device to their collection.

Lindsey Turrentine: "Apple is probably hoping that fashionistas, people who care a lot about the way they look, are going to buy that luxury item and show it off, and really make the rest of the world envious and want to buy that product."

The global smartwatch market is primarily dominated by a few key players, with Apple being the market leader by a significant margin. Here's a snapshot of the market share at that time:

Apple

Apple's Apple Watch was the clear leader in the global smartwatch market, accounting for the largest share. Apple's ecosystem, brand recognition, and continuous innovation have helped it maintain its dominant position.

Samsung

Samsung's Galaxy Watch series was one of the most significant competitors to the Apple Watch. Samsung offered a range of smartwatches with various features and designs to cater to different consumer preferences.

Fitbit (now part of Google)

Fitbit was well-known for its fitness trackers and smartwatches, catering to health-conscious consumers. Fitbit was acquired by Google in 2021, potentially enhancing its smartwatch offerings.

Garmin

Garmin primarily targeted the sports and fitness market with its smartwatches, focusing on features like GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and outdoor activities. It held a substantial share in this niche market.

Other Players

Various other companies, including Huawei, Xiaomi, Fossil Group (which licenses brands like Michael Kors and Skagen), and smaller players, also had a presence in the smartwatch market, though their shares were generally smaller than the top players.

It's important to note that market dynamics can change due to factors such as new product releases, shifting consumer preferences, and evolving technology. Additionally, new players may enter the market, and existing players may gain or lose market share.
