'Lightning' Bolt Powers Jamaica to Record 4X100 Relay Win

Daegu, South Korea

One day after ruling the men's 200 meters, Usain Bolt helped set the only world record at the 13th world championships Sunday, when anchored Jamaica to a world record time in the men's 4x100 meter relay.

The 24-year-old Bolt, who has apparently brushed off any signs of disappointment following his 100m finals disqualification, was scorching as he came charging down the straight well and crossed the line for a time of 37.04 seconds.

That time was the only world record set in nine days of competition at the 2011 world track and field championships.

The double Olympic sprint champion and world record holder Bolt, who came to Daegu seeking the same three gold medals he won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 world championships, took over the anchor role in the absence of injured former world record holder Asafa Powell.

Jamaica had a blitzing start with Nesta Carter leading off the relay and making a good handover to Michael Frater. Yohan Blake, the 100 world champion following the disqualification of Bolt in the final, ran the third leg.

Bolt, who ran the third leg in Beijing, received the baton from Blake, with a commanding lead before powering the Jamaican squad home to a record time.

It eclipsed a three-year-old mark of 37.10 seconds the Jamaicans ran to capture the gold at the Beijing Games in 2008.

France finished second with a time of 38.20 seconds, and Saint Kitts and Nevis took the bronze in 38.49.

Bolt left Daegu with two gold medals and a world record.

Meanwhile, the United States won the women's 4x100-meter relay besting defending champion Jamaica, which settled for the silver. Ukraine finished third.

In the men's triple jump, American Christian Taylor leaped to a world-leading 17.96 meters to claim the gold medal, defeating defending champ Phillips Idowu of Britain, who logged 17.77 meters.

Kenya's Abel Kirui continued his dominance in the men's marathon, while British track and field athlete Mohamed Farah took the gold in the men's 5,000 meters.

Russian Tatyana Lysenko captured the gold in the hammer throw, while fellow countrymate Mariya Savinova bested defending champion Caster Semenya in the 800 meters.
