Nicklas Backstrom slotted a slapshot into the net in the second overtime as the Washington Capitals edged the Boston Bruins to level their first-round Eastern Conference series at one game apiece.

Backstrom delivered the game-winning shot 2:56 minutes into the second overtime to give the Capitals a much-needed momentum booster going into Game 3 and 4 in Verizon Center.

Coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in Game 1, the Capitals opened the second game of their series aggressively but the Bruins defense remained impenetrable after the first 20 minutes.

Left winger Troy Brouwer scored the first goal of Game 2, sneaking in a 6-feet wrister off an assist from Alex Ovechkin and Karl Azner 17:57 minutes into the second period.

Bruins left winger Benoit Pouliot nailed the equalizer 12:13 into the third period to force the game into overtime.

However, Backstorm stepped up and played the hero's role for his team.

Tim Thomas recorded 37 saves in the game, but Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby did an even greater job defending between the pipes with 43 saves.
