Rangers Outlast Devils: Regain Control of Eastern Conference Finals
2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
Newark, NJ
Dan Girardi broke the scoring ice in the third period and rookie Chris Kreider continued his mind-blowing playoff run to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Rangers have a 2-1 lead in the series with Game 4 scheduled for Monday night, also at the Prudential Center.
Girardi scored a power play goal at 3:18 of the third period to break a scoreless tie. Kreider added a goal two minutes later and Rangers captain Ryan Callahan added an empty net goal with 2:13 left to cap the scoring.
Rangers goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist was the difference, making 36 saves or his second shutout in the three games.
After two scoreless periods, the Rangers capitalized soon after Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador was whistled for hooking. Brad Richards won a faceoff and the puck went to Girardi, who beat Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Kreider, the former Boston College standout, doubled the advantage when he deflected a shot by Ryan McDonagh past Brodeur for a 2-0 lead at 5:16 of the third period.
It was Kreider's fifth goal of the playoffs. Before the playoffs, he was still playing in college at the NCAA Frozen Four, leading BC to the NCAA championship.
