Bronx, NY
Max Scherzer continued his success against the New York Yankees, this time in a huge spot.
Scherzer was strong in six innings of work and Miguel Cabrera added a two-run home run as the Detroit Tigers evened the American League Division Series at one game apiece with a 5-3 victory over the Yankees Sunday.
Scherzer had a no-hitter through five and allowed two hits and four walks in six-plus innings to improve to 4-0 lifetime against New York.
Cabrera finished with three hits, including a two-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the sixth off Yankees starter Freddy Garcia.
Cabrera's homer was his fourth in 24 career at-bats against Garcia, who had not lost at Yankee Stadium since June 7.
Magglio Ordonez had three hits and Victor Martinez and Don Kelly chipped in RBI singles to help the Tigers snap the Yankees' seven-game ALDS winning streak.
Joaquin Benoit surrendered Curtis Granderson's solo homer in the eighth and Jose Valverde yielded two runs in the ninth on a leadoff homer by Nick Swisher and sacrifice fly by Andruw Jones before finally closing the door.
