Hattiesburg, MS
Ellis Johnson was named the new head coach for the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, replacing Larry Fedora who is set to leave the program for North Carolina.
The 59-year-old Johnson was introduced Tuesday as the new head coach for the Golden Eagles, who have recorded 18 consecutive winning seasons and 10 straight bowl games appearance.
Moreover, Johnson will be taking over a football team that recently finished with their first 10-win season in 23 years and capped their campaign with a stunning 49-28 victory over no.8 Houston Cougars to bag their first Conference USA title in 8 years - all achieved under Fedora.
Nevertheless, Johnson is confident he can guide Southern Mississippi to even greater highs, including its first BCS Bowl match in school's history.
"As I take over this program, I'm looking for something that's never been done before," Johnson told reporters during Tuesday's press conference. "Frankly, there's very little left. It's intimidating, but it's also challenging.
Johnson spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator for South Carolina Gamecocks before taking the coaching job at Southern Mississippi.
