Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says that the NCAA can't do anything about Toledo's controversial loss to Syracuse but he is still pushing the Big East to do something.

Steinbrecher spoke regarding the outcome of the Toledo-Syracuse game on Saturday in which MAC member Toledo lost 33-30 in overtime.

The Rockets likely would have had an excellent chance to win in regulation had a Syracuse extra point been correctly called as no good.

"By rule, once the game is declared over, the score is final and there is no recourse to reverse an outcome," Steinbrecher said.

While he acknowledged NCAA rules, Steinbrecher put the onus on the Big East.

"We are confident that proper action will be taken by the Big East Conference," Steinbrecher said.

Big East Associate Commissioner John Paquette reiterated NCAA rules when asked about Steinbrecher's comments and said the league would stand by a statement over the weekend from Big East coordinator of football officiating, Terry McAulay.

"We have concluded that the ruling on the field that the kick passed between the uprights was incorrect, and that the replay official made an error in failing to reverse that ruling. ... We are confident that our officiating staff will learn from this situation in order to prevent a reoccurrence," McAulay said.

Replay showed that Syracuse had in fact missed an extra point that put the Orange ahead by three. Officials reviewed the kick, but the call on the field was somehow upheld.

Toledo would later kick a field goal to send the game into overtime. Had that extra point been disallowed, Toledo might have been kicking a field goal to win.
