San Diego, CA
After getting shut out of the postseason last year, the Texas Longhorns rebounded and concluded a successful campaign by playing mistake-free football in their 21-10 victory over the California Golden Bears at Qualcomm Stadium.
David Ash threw for one TD and caught another, all while not turning the ball over for the Longhorns (8-5), whose 18-year streak of being invited to the bowl season was snapped last season.
Ash, part of the dual QB system in Texas, completed 14-of-23 passes for 142 yards.
Apart from joining a short list of quarterbacks who have caught a TD pass in the Holiday Bowl, Ash accounted 47 of his passing yards in an impressive play on Texas' go-ahead TD in the third quarter.
On that play, Ash hooked up with Marquise Goodwin, who made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch in full stride that gave the Longhorns a 14-10 lead.
The Texas defense, which ranked among the top 20 in the country, was also key in the victory as it accounted for five takeaways and sacked Cal's quarterback Zach Maynard six times, both season highs.
It also held the Golden Bears to seven yards rushing, as the Longhorns dominated the ground game, outrushing Cal by 102 yards.
Maynard passed for 188 yards but threw an interception and lost a fumble for the Golden Bears (7-6), who are winless in five all-time meetings between the two storied programs on the gridiron.
It marked the fifth Holiday Bowl appearance for Texas since 2000 under coach Mack Brown, who is now 3-2 in the event.
