St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is stepping down as the team's manager, he announced.

La Russa goes out on top, just days after the Cards topped the Texas Rangers in the World Series. He departs with three titles and in third-place all-time in wins for a skipper.

"I think this just feels like it's time to end it," the 67-year-old said at a press conference at Busch Stadium. "Other than some of the personal attachments, I feel good .. I feel good that this is the right decision."

La Russa said he told his players at a brief meeting after Sunday's celebration and parade in St. Louis. "Some grown men cried ... I kind of liked that because they made me cry a few times."

La Russa also won titles with the Cards in 2006 and with the Oakland A's in 1989.
