Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander parlayed his outstanding season into an AL Cy Young Award, which he captured in unanimous fashion by voters.

The dominant starter led the league with 24 wins, 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts.

Verlander said he will take a little time to let the honor soak in.

"I've worked extremely hard for this," Verlander told mlb.com of winning the award. "You guys know how competitive I am. Looking at the big picture of things, it'd be nice to win some more. But for right now, I've got to be excited about where I'm at. [It's been] a lot of hard work, a lot of preparation, and I couldn't be more excited. I don't want to look too far to the future right now. I just want to enjoy this with my family and friends."

Angels' stellar starter Jered Weaver received 17 second-place votes and collected 97 points for second place, followed by James Shields of the Rays who racked up 66 and CC Sabathia of the Yankees who was fourth with 63.
