Tigers Ace Justin Verlander Snags AL MVP Prize
John Nestor
NY, NY
Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who led the AL in wins with 24, strikeouts with 250 and ERA at 2.40, took home the AL MVP honor Monday.
He became the first pitcher since 1992 to win MVP honors, following the great Dennis Eckersley in accomplishing the feat.
Verlander enjoyed a remarkable season in which he tossed 251 innings, allowed opposing batters just a .192 batting average and recorded a 0.92 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched) ratio.
Outfielders in Jacoby Ellsbury of the Boston Red Sox finished second, followed by Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays and Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees.
