The Boston Red Sox acquired closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Josh Reddick.
The Red Sox also sent minor league third baseman Miles Head and 19-year-old hurler Raul Alcantera to the A's.
The American League Rookie of the Year in 2009, Bailey posted went 0-4 with 24 saves and a 3.24 ERA last season.
The 27-year-old righthander will replace Jonathan Papelbon, who signed a $50 million, four-year contract as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies in November.
"Andrew is a proven top-quality closer in the American League," Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. "He's done it for three years in the American League, he's had a lot of success. He's converted a high percentage of his opportunities.
"He's got the stuff. We really like his makeup for Boston and everything we've learned about him the last few weeks has only strengthened our conviction that he can fit in really well to our team and our clubhouse."
Sweeney, 26, batted .265 with one homer and 25 RBIs in 108 games last season.
Reddick, 24, hit .280 with seven homers an 28 RBIs in 87 games with Boston last year.
"It was a combination of getting back a Major League-ready position player -- we think Josh is an everyday outfielder who we've liked for quite some time -- and prospects who we really like that made this a good option for us," A's assistant general manager David Forst said.
