The New York Mets have placed right-hander Dillon Gee on the 15-day disabled list after blood clot was discovered in the artery of his right shoulder

The blood clot was discovered after Gee underwent MRI after experiencing numbness in his fingers, said manager Terry Collins.

"On Sunday, Dillon Gee complained of numbness in the fingers of his right hand. Yesterday, after extensive testing, Dillon was found to have a clot in an artery in his right shoulder and doctors at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City used a catheter to break up the clot," the Mets said in a statement.

"Dillon will remain hospitalized for the next day or two to ensure that the clot is fully resolved. Dillon will not make his next start and will be placed on the disabled list. The timing of his return to baseball activity is currently undetermined," the statement added.

Gee, 26, was scheduled to pitch the Mets' second-half opener in Atlanta on Friday. He was 6-7 with a 4.10 ERA in 17 first-half starts.

He has endured no major medical issues since tearing the labrum in his right shoulder in 2009 but ultimately avoiding surgery.

Last year, Gee started 27 of 30 games for the Mets and finished the season with a 13-6 record and 114 strikeouts. In 52 games with the Mets, he is 21-15 with an ERA of 4.06.
