Denver, Co
Jamie Moyer became the oldest pitcher to win a major league game as he threw seven effective innings to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Moyer (1-2), who is 49 years and 150 days old, yielded only two runs and six hits. Jack Quinn, who was 49 years, 70 days old, previously held the record when he earned his final victory on Sept. 13, 1932.
Moyer also tied Hall of Famer Jim Palmer for 35th place on the all-time wins list with 268. It was Moyer's first win since June 27, 2010.
"He pitched well," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I've seen it obviously for a long time. That was his basic game, what you saw tonight. The changeup down and away. Threw some cutters inside, threw the backdoor cutter. Threw some sinkers, kept us off balance."
Moyer has won 104 games since the beginning of his age-40 season, which was 2003. Hall of Famer Phil Niekro won 121 games from his age-40 season onward, the most ever.
To help Moyer pick up the historic win Dexter Fowler hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Wilin Rosario and Michael Cuddyer added RBI doubles.
The win was historic, but Moyer tried to treat it like any other game.
"Today, for me, just like it's been my previous two starts - going out and trying to give my best effort," Moyer said.
