St. Louis, MO

The St. Louis Cardinals interviewed Terry Francona for its open manager job.

The meeting marked the first time the Cardinals have interviewed a candidate who has Major League coaching or managing experience.

Francona won a pair of World Series titles in his most recent managerial stint in Boston.

Jose Oquendo and Ryne Sandberg are expected to be interviewed by the Cardinals. After that the club may whittle down its list pf prospective candidates or make its choice. No other candidates are known to be in the running.

Francona managed the Red Sox for eight seasons and left after this past season after the club blew a nine-game September lead in the AL Wild-Card race.

St. Louis is seeking a replacement for Tony La Russa, who retired two days after winning his second World Series in 16 seasons with the Cardinals.

St. Louis previously interviewed Mike Matheny, Joe McEwing and Chris Maloney. Matheny and Maloney have organizational ties and McEwing played for St. Louis.
