St. Louis, MO

The St. Louis Cardinals introduced former catcher Mike Matheny as their new manager.

Matheny is the successor to Tony La Russa who retired after leading the Cardinals to a World Series title in seven games over the Texas Rangers.

A three-time Gold Glove winner, Matheny played for the Cardinals between 2000-2004.

Matheny was one of six who the Cardinals interviewed for the position. Others St. Louis spoke to about the job included Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, longtime Cardinals third-base coach Jose Oquendo, former Boston manager Terry Francona, Triple-A manager Chris Maloney, and Chicago White Sox coach Joe McEwing.

Matheny will take over the job without having ever coached or managed in professional baseball. He served as a special assistant to general manager John Mozeliak, and as an instructor in Spring Training.
