The first day of Olympic competition on the gymnast floor ends in an unexpected turn as overwhelming favorite Jordyn Wieber failed to qualify in the all-around final in women's gymnastics.

Wieber, the reigning national and world all-around champion, was not able to advance in the medal round after garnering very low scores in floor exercises, bars, beam, and vault.

American all-around gymnast Aly Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas also gained low scores from the judges but somehow progressed to the event's finals.

Head coach John Geddert said Wieber was devastated after the loss through remains supportive for her teammates who are still in contention for gold.

"She has trained her entire life for this day and to have it turn out anything less than she deserves is going to be devastating. She has waited her entire career for this. She is happy for her teammates and disappointed that she doesn't get to move on," Geddert told People.com Sunday.

In her latest comment on Twitter, the 17-year-old Wieber appeared to have shifted her focus on the next event, the team final scheduled for Tuesday.

"Thank you all for your love and support," Wieber tweeted. "I am so proud of our team today and I can't wait for team finals!!"
