Former US women's soccer defender and NBC Olympic commentator Brandi Chastain fired back at goalkeeper Hope Solo, saying she is doing her job as an "honest and objective" Olympic analyst in a squabble between the pair.
"I'm here to do my job, which is to be an honest and objective analyst at the Olympics," said Chastain, who was accused by Solo of being "out of touch" and "uneducated" after she criticized current U.S. defender Rachel Buehler during the Olympic soccer team's 3-0 win over Colombia Saturday.
During the broadcast, Chastain said a defender's responsibilities are: "Defend. Win the ball. And then keep possession. And that's something that Rachel Buehler actually needs to, I think, improve on in this tournament."
In her Twitter account, Solo criticized Chastain and told her to "get more educated because the game has changed from a decade ago."
Chastain became famous for taking off her jersey after kicking the game-winning penalty shot against China in the World Cup final in 1999. One of the top all-time defenders for the U.S. team, Chastain played in 192 international games from 1988-2004.
The US women's soccer team announced Sunday that Solo will not be disciplined for her Twitter rant against Chastain.
Solo is one of the most outspoken players on the team.
In 2007, she criticized coach Greg Ryan for benching her in the semifinals of the 2007 World Cup. For this, she was kicked off the squad.
She returned the next year and anchored the team's gold-medal run at the 2008 Beijing Olympic. Last year, she cemented her name as one of the best goalkeepers in the world after winning the golden glove award for top goalie at last year's World Cup in Germany.
Three weeks ago, Solo received a warning from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after she was tested positive for a banned substance. It was believed to be the first positive drug test in the history of the U.S. women's soccer program.
Solo called the doping episode "honest mistake" and said the positive test for the banned substance Canrenone resulted from a premenstrual medication prescribed by her doctor.
