Swiss fans celebrated their country's victory against Ecuador at the Brasilia National Stadium on Sunday (June 15). Haris Seferovic struck a stoppage time winner as Switzerland fought back from a goal down to claim a thrilling last-gasp 2-1 win in a scrappy but entertaining Group E opener. Groups of jubilant Swiss poured out of the 68,000-seat stadium into the warm afternoon sun in the Brazilian capital

"I wish Ecuador all the best. It's unbelievable. Nine games have been played and 31 goals have been scored. It is amazing football," said Bruno Gebel, from Basel. "It was important, an important victory against Ecuador, like a final match. If we had lost it would have looked bad for us for getting to the next round but now it's looking good," said Matthias Utrich, from Zurich. "Super, sensational," said Marion Fux, from Fribourg.

But Swiss revellers were outnumbered by dejected Ecuadorians.

Luis Cruz from Sangoloqui, holding a banner reading 'We Love our Ecuador from our Souls,' was disappointed, but said it was far from over for his team. "Very sad, very sad. Because we lost but we played better than Switzerland. But football is like that. What's important is that we are all brothers. But we lost. For the moment we have lost, but against Honduras we will win, and against France too," he said. "After this match I am a little sad, because we came from far away to see our country win but sadly it didn't happen. But that's how football is. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. For one or two minutes we were close to winning, and we would have been happy to win 2-1, but the result was the opposite," said Julio Quiyupangui, wearing a curly wig in his national colours.

Switzerland thought they had taken the lead when Josip Drmic poked home from close range with 20 minutes left but the strike was wrongly ruled out for offside. But it mattered little as Seferovic's late effort claimed all three points. The Swiss beat Spain in their opening match in South Africa four years ago but failed to reach the knockout stages.
