The Ravens defense was dominant again this season.

The Ravens allowed the 3rd-fewest points in the NFL this season, permitting only 244 (15.3 per game). The Ravens finished the regular season ranked as the NFL's No. 2 defense (261.1 ypg). Baltimore's rush defense (81.4) ranked 3rd, while the pass defense (179.7) finished 2nd. The Ravens have now gone 6 straight seasons ranking in the top 6 in total defense.

The defense set 3 team records: opponent QB rating (60.6), rushing TDs allowed (4) and rushing 1st downs allowed (58). Baltimore led the NFL with 26 INTs, including 9 by S Ed Reed, which was also an NFL high. Baltimore was 3rd against the run and 2nd versus the pass in 2008. The Ravens also were tops in the NFL producing 3-and-outs (60). The Ravens did not allow a 100-yard rusher for the 2nd straight season (current string is 35 games, dating back to 2006).

For his effort in December, Pro Bowl Safety Ed Reed was named the AFC's Defensive Player of the month.

A catalyst for the NFL’s second-ranked defense, Reed posted 16 tackles, one sack, a league-high six interceptions, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, including a fumble recovery-touchdown return as Baltimore posted a 3-1 record in December. In Week 14 against Washington (12/7), Reed earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors by registering two tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a fumble return-touchdown in a 24-10 victory over the Redskins. Reed registered two interceptions in three of four games in December and totaled a league-high nine interceptions in 2008. The Pro Bowl safety helped the Ravens post a NFL-best 26 interceptions this season, which ranks second most in team history (28 in 2006).

The Ravens offense stepped up as well.

Rookie QB Joe Flacco (18th selection in 1st round) started every game this season on offense. In Flacco's 1st 5 games, when the Ravens went 2-3, Flacco threw 1 TD and 7 INTs for a QB rating of 60.6. Over the last 11 games of the regular season (9-2), Flacco threw 13 TDs with 5 INTs and produced a 90.2 rating.

The Ravens totaled 148.5 rushing yards per game this season, standing as the NFL's No. 4 ground attack. The Ravens running attack was led by Le'Ron McClain (232 att, 902 yds, 10 TDs), Willis McGahee (170 att, 671 yds, 7 TDs) and rookie Ray Rice (107 att, 454 yds, 4.2 avg.).

WR Derrick Mason produced 80 catches for 1,037 yards.

Part of the Ravens success can be attributed to sustaining long drives and controlling the clock. The Baltimore Ravens led the NFL in time of possession (33:10).

The Ravens compiled the NFL's top scoring differential (tied with Tennessee) in 2008, outscoring opponents 385-244. Additionally, Baltimore only allowed a league-low 60 points in the 4th quarter while scoring 115 (good for a +55 differential).

In the second half, Baltimore won the turnover battle and their defense proved to be the deciding factor in this contest. Four plays later, Fullback Le'Ron McClain would score on a 1 yard run. On the next possession, Ed Reed intercepted a Derek Anderson pass intended for Tight End Steve Heiden and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.

After forcing another 3-and-out, Baltimore would capitalize on a Browns personal foul from the 50 yard line, driving 35 yards for a touchdown, finishing the drive with a 1 yard run from Le'Ron McClain.

The Browns tried to rally late in the game, but Samari Rolle intercepted Derek Anderson with less than two minutes to play, ensuring no chance of a comeback.

On Wild Card Weekend Everybody Starts on Equal Ground

In one of the most unpredictable and story-filled NFL regular seasons in memory, the road to Tampa Bay, Florida and Super Bowl XLIII on February 1 begins this Saturday and Sunday with the NFL 2008 Playoffs and Wild Card Weekend. How each of the NFL Playoff teams got here doesn't matter. Nor does it matter who got in first or who got in last. All that matters is that they're here and ready to go.

NFL 2008: NFL Playoffs are Always Unpredictable

As unpredictable as the NFL 2008 Season has been the past two weeks, with the NFL one thing may be for certain -- there will always be change. A prime example is the NFL teams that make and don't make the playoffs year after year.

Falcons Visit Cardinals in Wild Card Weekend's 1st Matchup
Atlanta Falcons (11-5) at Arizona Cardinals (9-7) NFL Playoffs Wild Card Weekend

The Arizona Cardinals, which scored a franchise record 424 points, boasts a high-flying attack led by QB Kurt Warner and wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston. The Atlanta Falcons are in the postseason for the first time since 2004. The Falcons are led by rookie QB Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner. The Falcons ended the season winning five of their last six, and eight of their last 10.

Don't Be Misled by Colts & Bolts Regular Season Records
Indianapolis Colts (12-4) at San Diego Chargers (8-8) NFL Playoffs Wild Card Weekend

Returning to San Diego for the second time in seven weeks to face a familiar playoff foe, the Indianapolis Colts, 12-4, meet the San Diego Chargers, 8-8, on Saturday, January 3. The Colts and Chargers met on November 23 this season. Indianapolis earned a 23-20 last-play victory over San Diego.

Ravens Seek to Defeat Dolphins Again in Miami
Baltimore Ravens (11-5) at Miami Dolphins (11-5) NFL Playoffs Wild Card Weekend

The game is a rematch of a regular season game between these teams this year, when Baltimore registered a 27-13 win on October 19 at Dolphin Stadium. The Ravens head to Miami hoping to return with the same result.

Eagles and Vikings on a Mission
Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) at Minnesota Vikings (10-6) NFL Playoffs Wild Card Weekend

After weak starts this season, both teams finished strong to propel themselves into the NFL 2008 playoffs. They both started the season slowly. The Eagles were 2-3; the Vikings 1-3. But both finished the season with strong winning streaks as the Eagles won 4 of their last 5, while the Vikings won 5 of their last 6.

NFL Playoffs 2008 Arizona Cardinals Regular Season Review

NFL Playoffs 2008 Atlanta Falcons Regular Season Review

Almost a complete reversal from last season's 4-12 mark, the Atlanta Falcons finished this season with an 11-5 record. In retrospect, the disappointment of the NFL 2007 season laid the groundwork for the Falcons success in 2008. The Falcons realized they needed to go back to the drawing board and conceive their Hire, Draft and Sign Strategy.

NFL Playoffs 2008 Baltimore Ravens Regular Season Review

The Ravens earned the AFC's final Wild Card spot with an 11-5 record, which included a 9-2 record after starting the season 2-3. The Baltimore Ravens set an NFL record for most wins by a team with both a rookie head coach (John Harbaugh) and rookie QB (Joe Flacco) along with the Atlanta Falcons (Head Coach Mike Smith and QB Matt Ryan).

NFL Playoffs 2008 Indianapolis Colts Regular Season Review

Halfway thru the NFL 2008 Season and after a mediocre 3-4 start, the Colts were in danger of not making the NFL playoffs for the first time in eight years. And then the Colts All-Pro Quarterback Peyton Manning got healthy and the Colts turned their season around to earn their seventh consecutive playoff berth with nine straight wins.

NFL Playoffs 2008 Miami Dolphins Regular Season Review

The Miami Dolphins finished the 2008 NFL regular season winning nine of their last 10 games to win the AFC East division title by virtue of their victory over the Jets at the Meadowlands on the last Sunday of the season. NFL Playoffs 2008 Minnesota Vikings Regular Season Review

The Vikings earned their playoff berth and clinched their first division title since 2000 with a 20-19 last-second victory at home over the New York Giants. NFL Playoffs 2008 Philadelphia Eagles Regular Season Review

With good fortune and another strong December, the Eagles catapulted themselves into the NFL 2008 Playoffs. The Eagles (9-6-1) destroyed the Cowboys at home by a final of 44-6 while the Buccaneers lost to the Raiders and Bears lost to the Texans earlier the day.
