Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has suffered a partial tear of two ligaments in his injured right knee, according to initial MRI results.

However, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said results of Griffin's MRI were inconclusive, adding that his star quarterback with undergo further examination by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida.

Shanahan said additional testing will be made to determine whether MRI results show new or previous injuries to Griffin's anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments.

In 2009, Griffin tore the ACL in the same knee while he was a sophomore at Baylor University.

"Any time you do have a former ACL injury, or an LCL, and you look at this MRI, sometimes its old injuries," Shanahan said. "That's why he's going to fly down there to see Dr. Andrews, get some new MRIs and get a physical examination."

Griffin suffered the injury during the Redskins loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the wild-card game Sunday.

Shanahan was later criticized for allowing Griffin to stay in the game despite reinjuring the knee that he sprained four weeks ago against Baltimore.

The head coach defended his decision, saying he made the right call to keep Griffin in the game.

"Robert's our franchise quarterback, and I'm not going to take the chance on his career to win a game," Shanahan said.

"But I also know that when you've got the belief in a guy, and you feel he can play at a certain level, and the doctors are telling you that he's okay to go in, then you've got to do what you think is right," he added.

However, Houston Texans running back Derrick Ward believed that Shanahan should be fired for endangering Griffin's career.

"Mike Shanahan should be fired for letting RG3 play today. Bottom line. You risk tearing his knee up to try to win and u see he isn't mobile," Ward said on his Twitter account.
