Frustration Leads Eagles to Bicker Among Themselves
NFL 2012

HOME > SPORTS

Philadelphia, PA

After two straight losses, the Philadelphia Eagles are now feeling the pressure and starting to bicker among themselves.

The boiling point came when the Eagles blew a 23-13 lead and lost to the Detroit Lions in overtime when kicker Jason Hanson booted a game-winning 45-yard field goal.

The loss led cornerback Nmandi Asomugha to question defensive coordinator Juan Castillo's decision to blitz late in the game and put cornerback Dominique Rogers-Cromartie on Calvin Johnson

Throughout the game, Asomugha was limiting Johnson's touches but the defensive shift allowed the Lions wide receiver to take over late in the game. He finished with 135 receiving yards and his amazing catch in overtime led to Hanson's game-winning kick.

Despite the abundance in talent, especially with quarterback Michael Vick at the helm, the Eagles are just 3-3 this season and things could get worse if coach Andy Reid could not stop the team's undisciplined play.

"I'll take responsibility for it -- I just know that it wasn't good enough all the way around," Reid said after the loss to the Lions. "There are times and places when everybody's got to look at themselves in the mirror and get better -- me included."

Reid is known as a disciplinarian coach but the Eagles are playing undisciplined football lately, according to veteran receiver Jason Avant.

"That's the bottom line. It's undisciplined football. An undisciplined team at this point. Six games in, it's embarrassing. That's the word. Embarrassing. For coaches and veteran players," Avant said.

"With the mind-set of, 'Me before the team,' in certain instances. And we need to address that before we play another ballgame," he added.

"The interesting thing about it is, Coach Reid is such a disciplinarian," Asomugha said. "And there are times in the game where that becomes an issue. It makes no sense."

The Eagles can use this week's bye to sort things out before they take on the Falcons on Oct. 28.

If they don't, it could cost Reid his job and will further put Vick's starting job on the line.
