Darrelle Revis Expected To Miss Season

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan described as a "major blow" the loss of star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who will undergo season-ending surgery to repair torn ACL in his left knee.

"Is it a major blow when you lose a great player like Darrelle Revis? Of course, absolutely it is," Ryan said. "But this is a football team."

Ryan announced that the Jets will be without their star defensive player for the rest of the season as MRI confirmed that Revis suffered a torn ACL in the third quarter of New York's 23-20 overtime win over the Miami Dolphins.

According to Ryan, Revis will wait two to three weeks to get his knee healthy before undergoing surgery. The usual recovery time for ACL surgery is six to nine months.

"Obviously that's a significant injury and it's something that we're going to have to overcome as a football team, we understand that," Ryan said. "He's such a great player and a great teammate -- we're going to lose that presence. That's the horrible thing that came out of the game."

"This is a team game, and as a team, we have to step it up," Ryan added. "We accept the challenge."

A source said the Jets will explore the free-agent and trade market for a veteran cornerback to fill the void left by Revis.

While they are hunting for one, 2010 first-round pick Kyle Wilson will replace Revis in the starting lineup, joining Antonio Cromartie.

"We're fortunate because we've got the best in the league in Darrelle and we also have a No. 1 corner in Cromartie," said Ryan. "I'm confident in Kyle."

Without Revis, the Jets surrendered 275 passing yards and two touchdowns to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

The Jets (2-1) are currently in first place in the AFC East.
