Seven From Sunday: Kickoff Weekend
NFL 2012 Week 1

HOME > SPORTS

A look at seven statistical highlights from games played the first week of the 2012 season.

Entering NFL 2012 Kickoff Weekend, only two rookie quarterbacks in NFL history had passed for at least 300 yards on Kickoff Weekend: PEYTON MANNING (302 yards, 1998) and CAM NEWTON (422 yards, 2011). That total was matched today when Washington's ROBERT GRIFFIN III (320 yards) and Indianapolis' ANDREW LUCK (309 yards) accomplished the feat.

Washington quarterback ROBERT GRIFFIN III completed 19 of 26 passes (73.1 percent) for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 139.9 passer rating in the Redskins' 40-32 win at New Orleans. Griffin is the only player in NFL history to pass for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception in his NFL debut.

Griffin threw an 88-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for his first career TD, tied with ED RUBBERT (1987) for the second-longest touchdown pass in a player's NFL debut (NEIL O'DONNELL, 89 yards, 1991).

New England quarterback TOM BRADY completed 23 of 31 passes (74.2 percent) for 236 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 117.1 passer rating in the Patriots' 34-13 win at Tennessee. The victory was Brady's 125th in his career as a starter and he reached the milestone in the fewest starts (160) in NFL history. The previous mark was held by PEYTON MANNING (184).

Brady's 125 wins are the fifth-most in NFL history among starting quarterbacks. He passed Pro Football Hall of Famer FRAN TARKENTON (124) today and trails only BRETT FAVRE (186), Hall of Famers JOHN ELWAY (148) and DAN MARINO (147) and Manning (141; Manning plays tonight on Sunday Night Football).

San Francisco wide receiver RANDY MOSS had a 14-yard touchdown reception in the 49ers' 30-22 win at Green Bay. Moss has 154 career touchdown catches and moved into sole possession of second place in NFL history. Pro Football Hall of Famer JERRY RICE had an NFL-record 197 career touchdown receptions.

Detroit quarterback MATTHEW STAFFORD passed for 355 yards and threw the game-winning touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining in the Lions' 27-23 win over St. Louis.

Stafford has now passed for at least 350 yards in four consecutive games, joining DREW BREES as the only players to accomplish the feat in NFL history.

Stafford made his 30th career start today and has 8,195 passing yards, the third-most through 30 starts by a QB who began his career in the Super Bowl era. Only KURT WARNER (8,739) and Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (8,467) had more passing yards through 30 starts.

The New York Jets defeated Buffalo 48-28 and became the third team in NFL history to score a touchdown via the rush, pass, interception-return and punt-return in a season opening game. The other two teams to accomplish the feat are the 1982 Miami Dolphins and 2003 Detroit Lions.

Jets quarterback MARK SANCHEZ threw three touchdown passes (two to rookie STEPHEN HILL, one to JEREMY KERLEY), running back SHONN GREENE had a rushing TD, cornerback ANTONIO CROMARTIE returned an interception 40 yards for a score and Kerley added a 68-yard punt-return TD.

Tampa Bay cornerback RONDE BARBER made his 200th consecutive start -- the longest streak in NFL history at the position -- in the Buccaneers' 16-10 win over Carolina. Barber had a sack and an interception in the victory and is the only player with at least 25 sacks (28) and 40 interceptions (44) in a career.
