Sean Payton has agreed in principle to a new five-year deal to stay head coach of the New Orleans Saints, according to a source closely associated with the negotiation.

However, the source spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been signed and finalized. The new deal is subject to league's approval.

Earlier, Saints owner Tom Benson told the Times-Picayune that Payton has been always the head coach of the team. "I never had any doubt about that," he said.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees echoed Benson's comments, saying that he had never any doubt about Payton staying with the team.

"Very happy that it is official. Never had any doubts though," Brees said in a text message to the Times-Picayune.

Payton, suspended for a full season for his role in the team's bounty scandal, was earlier rumored to be courted by the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The league voided the original contract extension signed by Payton in 2011 because it contained a clause where he will be prevented from leaving the team if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended, fired or left the organization.

Without Payton, the Saints finished the season with a disappointing record. Payton has a 62-34 regular season record and 5-3 in the postseason with the Saints.
