The New York Jets have discreetly started their search for a new general manager to replace Mike Tannenbaum, who is expected to be dismissed after the team's dismal 6-9 record this season.

According to several media outlets, the Jets have talked to potential candidates, including Houston Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan.

Mainly blamed for the Jets missing the playoffs this season, Tannenbaum has two years remaining in his contract. Sources said he will be retained by owner Woody Johnson to overlook the team's cap management.

A Jets spokesman declined to comment on the report, saying the team won't react on potential moves until after the season. Tannenbaum and Johnson also declined to comment on the report.

During his weekly radio show, coach Rex Ryan declined to speculate on how he'd feel working for a new general manager.

"That's a huge what-if right there," Ryan said. "Quite honestly, my thing is we have one game left in the regular season. If my focus is anywhere else, I'm not setting this team up for success. Obviously, what happens in the future, after that, it's debatable."

Since Tannenbaum took over the GM post in 2006, the Jets are 57-54, plus four playoff victories. They reached back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010, but they've gone 14-17 since the second title-game appearance.

However, Tannenbaum has been under fire for questionable contract extension for quarterback Mark Sanchez and the ill-fated Tim Tebow trade.
