The Ravens wrapped up their final media-friendly organized team activity workout of the spring, with 19 players not at practice, including Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs.

The team said that Suggs underwent a successful surgery on his Achilles tendon.

Reports indicated Suggs was hurt playing basketball, a claim refuted by NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, who has continually maintained he tore his right Achilles tendon during conditioning skills.

Witnesses say Suggs hurt himself during a basketball tournament on April 29, ESPN.com reported.

They were staff members, who attended a three-game basketball tournament in Maricopa, Ariz., in which Suggs reportedly played that weekend.

"He got hurt Sunday prior to the (basketball tournament) championship game," Herman (Sonny) Hoffman, the director of the Akchin Gymnasium in Ariz., said via ESPN.com.

When asked if Suggs did injure his Achilles, Hoffman said: "More than likely it was. My staff saw the whole incident. It was the condition you'd describe for a torn Achilles. He had no movement, no step, and it swelled up right away."

If the report is accurate, some observers are curious why Suggs would not come clean about the injury, as many teams allow offseason basketball as a way for their players to stay in shape.

Suggs has a reputation in the NFL as an avid basketball player, and the Ravens are aware the five-time Pro Bowl pick and two-time All-Pro plays a lot of hoops in the offseason.

He even acknowledged last year that he played basketball four or five times a week in a semi-pro league in his home state of Arizona last offseason.

Those offseason workouts -- playing basketball -- helped Suggs shed pounds after getting ripped for reporting to training camp overweight and out of shape after signing his multi-year big contract in 2009.

There should be no issue with Suggs playing basketball as it may be his way to stay in shape in the past two offseasons. It resulted to back-to-back Pro Bowls for the first time for the embattled linebacker.

It is not certain if Suggs, 29, will out for the entire 2012 season or at least a large chunk of it.

Baltimore drafted Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw as a potential replacement, but the Ravens will certainly miss the presence of Suggs, who helped the team to a 12-win record and an AFC North title this past season.

Suggs registered 14 sacks with 70 tackles, seven forced fumbles and a pair of interceptions last year.
