Colts Set Sights on Cowboys Cornerback Mike Jenkins

After acquiring Cassius Vaughn from the Broncos this week via trade, Indianapolis is not through upgrading at the position after it was reported that the Colts are looking to add Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins to their secondary.

The Colts have made multiple trade offers to acquire Dallas' disgruntled cornerback, according to ESPN.com, citing a league source.

The Cowboys have indicated they are not interested in trading their 2008 first-round draft pick, but the same report, citing another NFL source, said that Dallas' position might have changed and a swap could be would be worked out for the right price.

According to NFL.com, Jenkins remains a key part of the Cowboys future and they are not looking to trade the 29-year-old cornerback, who will enter the final year of his contract and is set to make a bargain-basement base salary of $1.052 million.

These factors make Jenkins even more marketable, but Dallas is expected to seek something significant for their Pro Bowler cornerback in case they deal him.

The Cowboys' leverage could diminish deeper into the summer, especially with Jenkins declining to participate from the club's OTAs in hopes of a trade.

Jenkins, who battled injuries last season, including a shoulder problem, became expendable when Dallas drafted Morris Claiborne with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

In March, the Cowboys also added free-agent cornerback Brandon Carr via a $50 million multi-year contract.

Dallas played five cornerbacks last season - - Jenkins, Terence Newman, Orlando Scandrick, Allan Ball and Frank Walker. Newman and Scandrick had some struggles last season, and both missed games due to injuries.

In the event Jenkins lands in Indianapolis, he would likely start over Jerraud Powers and Kevin Thomas, who are penciled in as starting cornerbacks with Vaughn as the nickel corner in the current framework of the Colts roster.

Jenkins, who made his only Pro Bowl in 2009, had 24 tackles and one interception in 12 starts last season.
