The Cleveland Browns have hired Rob Chudzinski as their new head coach.

He replaces Pat Shurmur, who was fired Dec. 31 after the Browns finished 5-11 this season.

Chudzinski returns to Cleveland, where he was the offensive coordinator from 2007-2008 under Romeo Crennel.

After his first stint on Cleveland's staff, Chudzinski spent two seasons as San Diego's assistant head coach/tight ends coach.

He then joined the Carolina Panthers as offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, where he was credited with quarterback Cam Newton's early success.

Chudzinski will bring in former San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator, FoxSports.com reported. Turner was fired last week by the Chargers. Chudzinski was assistant head coach/tight ends coach under Turner before leaving for Carolina.

The Browns haven't won more than five games since 2007 and haven't made the playoffs since 2002.

One of Chudzinski's first jobs this offseason is to determine if quarterback Brandon Weeden, the Browns' 2012 first-round pick, is in the team's long-term plans.
