Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made his first official move, acquiring quarterback Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a second-round pick this year and a conditional pick in the 2014 draft.

A source told USA Today that the 49ers and the Chiefs have reached an agreement but the deal cannot be officially announced until March 12 when the league's new year begins.

Despite having the No. 1 pick, the Chiefs have opted to make a trade for an experienced signal caller rather than pick one from the thin lineup of available quarterbacks in the draft.

With Smith now in their fold, the Chiefs could use that selection to take Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel to provide protection for Smith.

"Good luck to Mr. Alex Smith. I know you'll do great under Andy Reid in KC. The ultimate pro!" 49ers safety Donte Whitner said on his Twitter account after the report came out.

"Best of luck to Alex in KC. Amazing teammate, friend, and person. I know he will do great things there," San Francisco left tackle Joe Staley also tweeted.

Smith, a former No. 1 overall pick, started this year for San Francisco but lost his job to Colin Kaepernick late in the season after suffering a concussion.

Smith is signed through the 2014 season but the Chiefs are expected to work out an extension, believing that they have their quarterback for the next several years.

Quarterback Matt Cassel, who started last season for the Chiefs, will likely be traded to avoid paying his $7.5 million base salary this season.

Reid was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles after going 4-12 last season. He immediately found a job when he was hired by the Chiefs to replace Romeo Crennel.
