Colts Running Game Silences 49ers

The Indianapolis Colts earned their first road victory of the NFL 2013 season, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 27-7 at Candlestick Park. The 20-point margin of victory was the largest for the Colts on the road since October 25, 2009 (at St. Louis). The Colts rushed for a season-high 179 yards and totaled three rushing touchdowns.

The Colts took a 7-0 lead on their first offensive possession of the game when recently acquired running back Trent Richardson scored a one-yard touchdown on his first carry as a member of the Colts. The 49ers tied the game in the first quarter when running back Kendall Hunter scored on a 13-yard run.

The Colts defense stiffened after the 49ers touchdown.

San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick was held to two completions in the first half and the 49ers were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Indianapolis took a 20-7 lead in the fourth quarter when kicker Adam Vinatieri split the uprights from 43 and 41 yards and quarterback Andrew Luck scored on a six-yard carry. It was Luck's seventh career rushing touchdown. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw logged his second touchdown as a member of the Colts in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring at 27-7.

Defensively for the Colts, linebacker Robert Mathis notched 1.5 sacks, bringing his season total to 4.5, which ranks tied for second in the NFL. Linebacker Jerrell Freeman recorded a sack for the second straight week to go along with a forced fumble. Cornerback Cassius Vaughn notched his first interception of the season when defensive end Cory Redding deflected a pass in the fourth quarter.
