Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald: Calvin Johnson is Best Wideout in the NFL

Tempe, AZ

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald called Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson the best wideout in the NFL today.

"Calvin's the best," Fitzgerald said. "I mean, look at his numbers. It is what it is."

Last season, Calvin Johnson led the league with 1,964 receiving yards while Fitzgerald managed just 798, his lowest total since his rookie season while catching passes from four different quarterbacks.

Fitzgerald echoed the statement by Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who earlier claimed that Johnson is the best receiver in the league.

Arians began the discussion by saying Sunday's Lions-Cardinals game will feature a matchup between two of the best at their respective positions: Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson and Johnson.

"You have to watch what you wish for sometimes," Arians said. "I think an elite player like Patrick, in my opinion, who is probably the best corner in the league, is going against the best receiver in the league."

In his 10th NFL season, Fitzgerald is having a Hall of Fame career. He has more receptions (772) than any other receiver through 141 games. He also was the second-youngest to 10,000 career yards and the youngest to 700 receptions.

However, Johnson, in his seventh year, isn't far behind. Through their first six seasons, Johnson had 7,836 yards compared to Fitzgerald's 7,067.

Peterson, who has been to the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons, said he believes Fitzgerald is the overall best wide receiver in the league but that Johnson took top honors in 2012.

"He's done a lot of great things for his team, and he had a huge success last year hooking up with [Lions quarterback] Matthew Stafford and gaining all those yards," Peterson said. "I would never put another guy in front of my guy."
