The New York Jets showed their commitment to keep Santonio Holmes, raising the wide receiver's guaranteed money to $15.25 million over the next two seasons.
Already guaranteed to receive $7.75 million of his salary in 2012, Holmes will again pocket $7.35 million in guaranteed money in 2013 after staying on the Jets roster for the second day of waiver period.
The Jets signed Holmes with a five-year, $45 million contract in 2010, hoping the Pro Bowl wide receiver will flourish offensively as one of the targets for quarterback Mark Sanchez.
However, Holmes played below expectations in his first season with the Jets, covering just 654 yards with 51 receptions with 8 touchdowns in 16 games. The Jets also missed the playoffs after going 8-8 in the 2011 season.
Jets coach Rex Ryan also said the team has already scheduled a meeting between Holmes and Sanchez to settle the rift between the team's top offensive weapons.
"I think they're actually going to get together," Ryan told ESPN Wednesday. "Look, we were all disappointed at the way the season went. That's one thing we have in common. We also have a burning desire to win, to right the ship."
