Rookie quarterback Cam Newton threw 18-for-23 for 256 yards with one TD and the Carolina Panthers defeated the Washington Redskins, 33-20 Saturday at Bank of America Stadium.

Newton continued to rack up impressive stats in his rookie season, this time leading the Panthers to their second victory against the slumping the Redskins.

Newton overcame a rough first half and delivered the goods for the Titans in crunch time, scoring on 16-yard run in the third quarter and hooking up with Brandon LaFell for a two-yard scoring pass in the fourth.

Jonathan Stewart also run 68 yards on 14 carries, while Steve Smith covered 143 yards on seven receptions.

The Panthers also got a huge lift from kicker Orlindo Mare, who scored in all of his four field goals attempts.

Redskins quarterback Jason Beck went 22-for-37 for 279 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Linebacker James Anderson spearheaded the Panthers defense with 12 tackles and a sack, while cornerback Chris Gamble had an interception and returned it 19 yards.

The Panthers (2-5) snapped their three-game losing skid and improved their home record to 2-2.

The Redskins (3-3) suffered their second straight loss after starting the season at 3-1.
