Logan Thomas covered 193 yards with one TD and Cody Journell converted two field goals, including a game-winning FG kick in overtime to cap Virginia Tech's 13-10 victory over the Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl at Florida Citrus Bowl.
Virginia Tech recorded a 12th consecutive win against former Big East rival Rutgers in a gutty fashion, overcoming a 10-point first half deficit to eke out a hard-earned overtime win over the Scarlet Knights.
Thomas struggled in the first half with two interceptions, but the junior quarterback found his groove in the second half as he led the Hokies to a furious rally in the final 12 minutes.
Trailing 10-0, Virginia Tech finally put their first three points on board after Journell converted a 25-yard field goal at 12:44. Thomas then tied it at 10-10 after hooking up with Corey Fuller for a 21-yard TD pass.
Thomas then led the final drive that put Journell in perfect position to launch the game-winning 22-yard FG kick.
After a slow start, Virginia Tech won its last three regular-season games to finish the season at 7-6 in overtime.
Virginia Tech rallied back from a 10-0 deficit at halftime to beat Rutgers 13-10 in an overtime thriller. The Virginia Tech Hokies avoided their first losing season since 1992.
