Hubert, Klein Carry No. 7 Kansas State to Big 12 Title
Fitzgerald Cecilio
Manhattan, KS
Junior running back John Hubert rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Collin Klein added two more on the ground as No. 7 Kansas State downed Texas, 42-24, to bag the Big 12 title and punch a ticket to the BCS Saturday at Bill Snyder Stadium.
The title was the third conference championship in school history and the first since beating No. 1 Oklahoma, 35-7, in 2003. The victory also gave the Wildcats (11-1) their sixth 11-win season in school history and the first since 2003.
The Wildcats finished tied with Oklahoma but clinched the Big 12 title and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl by virtue of their 24-19 win over the Sooners Sept. 22.
Hubert, who finished with 66 yards on 14 carries, now has 15 touchdown runs this season after just three in 13 games last year. He also tallied his fourth multi-touchdown game of the season.
Klein led the running corps with 103 yards on 23 carries aside from completing eight of 14 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown.
With two rushing touchdowns, Klein extended his feat of being the first quarterback from a BCS school in the BCS era to rush for at least 20 touchdowns and pass for at least 10 touchdowns in multiple seasons.
He is one of just four players to accomplish the feat once, joining former Heisman Trophy winners Cam Newton (Auburn, 2010), Tim Tebow (Florida, 2007) and Eric Crouch (Nebraska, 2000).
Wildcats wide receiver Tyler Lockett tallied 73 yards on two catches and a touchdown.
Defensive back Nigel Malone picked off the 12th pass of his career and the fifth of the season in the first quarter, which led to the Wildcats' first touchdown. Linebacker Arthur Brown had 11 tackles.
Quarterback Case McCoy finished 26-for-34 for 314 yards and two touchdowns but had two interceptions. Running back Malcolm Brown ran for a touchdown and caught another and wideout Jaxon Shipley added a score for the Longhorns, who led 10-7 at the break.
Hubert and Brown traded touchdown runs before the former gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a two-yard run with 47 seconds left in the third period.
In the fourth, the Wildcats extended their lead to 42-17 behind Klein's 44-yard touchdown heave to Lockett, Hubert's one-yard scoring run and Klein's nine-yard scoring burst.
