Texas Longhorns offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin will replace Gus Malzahn as head coach at Arkansas State.

He will begin immediately at Arkansas State and will not coach the Longhorns in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon State.

The 35-year-old Harsin, a former Boise State assistant, helped Texas to a 16-9 record in two seasons.

He was known for his creative play-calling. Despite UT's issues with inconsistent quarterback play, the Longhorns still managed to rank No. 24 in scoring this fall.

Former UT star Major Applewhite and Stanford offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton are the leading candidates to take over Harsin's role for Texas.

Malzahn left ASU for Auburn last week after one season, where he led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record and the Sun Belt Conference title.
