Aaron Murray tossed for 215 yards and two touchdowns as Georgia manhandled in-state rival Georgia Tech, 42-10, Saturday in front of 92,746 fans at Sanford Stadium to earn the Governors' Cup and book a place in the SEC championship game.
The win moved the Bulldogs to 11-1 on the season and will face Alabama or LSU depending on the outcome of the Crimson's Tide game against Auburn to be played Saturday afternoon. Georgia last won the SEC title in 2005 when the Bulldogs defeated LSU.
With the win, Georgia also set a new school record in points scored in a season with 456, erasing the previous record of 450, set in 2002 over a 14-game season.
Murray completed 14 of 17 passes and eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for a season to become the first quarterback in SEC history to have 3,000 passing yards in three straight years.
Murray's touchdown catches went to Rhett McGowan and Jay Rome while cornerback Malcolm Mitchell finished with 88 yards on three catches.
Todd Gurley led the Bulldogs' ground attack, rushing for 97 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns while Keith Marshall picked up 66 yards on seven carries and two scores.
Alec Ogletree led the Bulldogs' defense with career-best 15 tackles and Christian Robinson added 13 tackles.
"This game means a lot for us. Our coaches prepared hard, they were diligent, and the players took to the coaching, I thought we played a superb game. I'm so proud of everybody. I could not have asked for a better day than today," said Bulldogs' head coach Mark Richt.
Vad Lee completed four of 12 passes for 65 yards before he was replaced by Tevin Washington, who hit six of nine passes for the Yellow Jackets, who slipped to 6-6.
Junior running back David Sims finished with 71 yards on 14 carries and provided the only touchdown for the Yellow Jackets in the fourth period.
