Mavericks Sign Point Guard Derek Fisher

In need of a solid and reliable point guard, the Dallas Mavericks have signed veteran playmaker Derek Fisher to a contract.

Coach Rick Carlisle refused to give details about the length and amount of the deal but said it is pending Fisher passing a physical.

The Mavericks need a dependable point guard after starter Darren Collison suffered a sprained right middle finger.

Also, Collison has been an inconsistent playmaker for the Mavericks despite averaging 12.9 points, 6.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds per outing.

"Right now, the point guard position is a challenge for us," Carlisle said. "I think Derek can help us."

With Collison injured, Carlisle has utilized Dominique Jones as his starting playmaker in the Mavericks' last three games.

The 38-year-old Fisher averaged 5.6 points and 2.7 assists in 63 games with the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder last season.

He also excelled during the Thunder's playoff run, averaging 6.3 points and 22 minutes per game. This will be his 17th season.

With 15 guaranteed contracts on the roster, the Mavericks will have to release a player to make room for Fisher.
