Boeing Dreamliner Takes Off After Three Years of Delay

Boeing 787 Dreamliner delivered to ANA lands at Tokyo's Haneda Airport
Tokyo, Japan
Boeing's Dreamliner finally flew after three years of delay. Flight NH7871 left Tokyo's Narita Airport with passengers and more than 40 journalists and arrived in Hong Kong after 4 hours and 30 minutes.
The jet, which is owned by All Nippon Airways, features wider cabin and larger windows. Its cabin is 75 centimeters (30 inches) wider than a 767 aircraft and its windows are 47 by 28 centimeters (18.5 by 11 inches). The Dreamliner also has larger luggage compartments and energy-saving light-emitting diode bulbs.
The 264-seat plane will return to Japan on Thursday and will fly commercially beginning November.
The Dreamliner was originally slated to be delivered by Boeing in 2008, but it was delayed seven times because of several setbacks suffered by the aircraft manufacturer. Boeing said because of the carbon fiber materials it used in building the jet, the Dreamliner is 20 percent more fuel efficient compared to planes of similar size. Because of its fuel efficiency, plane operators are expected to save up to $132 million a year.
Boeing is scheduled to deliver dozens more Dreamliners to All Nippon Airways in the coming years. To cut the backlog, Boeing plans to manufacture 10 Dreamliners monthly from 2013 to meet the air carrier's order of 55 planes.
Due to the delays in production, China Eastern Airlines last week canceled orders for 24 Dreamliners, swapping for 737s.
Boeing had 821 orders for Dreamliners at the end of September, including from Air China, British Airways, Delta Air Lines and Japan Airlines.
