Washington D.C.

Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin insists that New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist single-handedly eliminated them from the postseason.

He explained that the Capitals' seven-game series loss to the Rangers in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals was not necessarily due to the defense of their opponents or the lack of adjustments made by them.

"You can see one guy beat us. Of course they have good team, great players, great defensive team, but the goalie out there was unbelievable. That's why he's best in league," said Ovechkin.

Lundqvist turned away 214 of the 226 shots he faced.

Ovechkin made the pronouncement, while disagreeing that he was solely responsible for the Capitals downfall.

While Washington is 20-3-2 this year when Ovechkin records a goal and 10-19-1 when he does not, he said that not one player can win the championship as it is a team effort.

He noted that whether he scored or not in the playoffs, they still lost.

"In the playoffs it doesn't matter if you score or not. You have to win. Team success is most important thing out there," Ovechkin said.
